Mother and Daughter. Thoughts On Swimming with Sisterlocks

After taking the pics of Soila, I thought I'd let hubby take a shot of us together. I think it's great to have her all locked up and she simply is great about retightenings. As I said in the post before we had just finished retightening which was quite a job because of the length of time we had left in between and because she swam nearly every day this summer.(we have a pool). Neither she nor I use a cap for swimming
a) because I can't find one that fits snugly over our locks and my big head and
b) because we tore her very first swim cap trying to put it on her head.
It didn't do much harm I don't think, except for extra swelling and puffiness on daughter's locks. Mine are totally locked. I was slightly worried about the effect on my hair color but really I haven't noticed any greeness. I always rinse my hair and Soila's after swimming but do not necessarily wash because we swam most every day in the summer often twice daily. I prefer a once-a-week wash because I have dry hair. What do other frequent swimmers do to protect their Sisterlocks? Any thoughts? I also deep conditioned once a week. Anyone know of good swim caps for lock wearers?

Hi Amba. I am an avid swimmer. I advise you to use a Silicone Speedo Cap or 2 if necessary. Latex swim caps tear easily. That is the best swim cap for Sisterlocks in my opinion. You both have nice locs. Your daughter is adorable.

You and your daughter look great!

I manage to do okay witha latex cap to hold my hair down, then a silicone cap "for long hair" on top. The edges get wet, but...

My hairdresser bought some caps for her daughter from England after a blog commenter told me about them. They are made espcially for locks and braids. I tried one on, and it fit over my hair with no problem, but my head was too big so the band hurt.

Thanks Sophia and Brunsli. I just gave up about the caps. (I have a pretty big head too). I'll ask my sis in law to get me a couple of the swim caps from England. Hmm I'll check out the speedo caps too.

Go Lala! You are one 'mpanyinsem' gal posing with your mummy! I love the photos.
TIP: Tie your hair up and lightly coat with a leave in conditioner to coat your hair and act as a barrier to the chlorine - I got that from a post in blackhairmedia.com (see http://forum.blackhairmedia.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=26713&PID=371301) Much love, your besotted Aunty Ama in Accra

Your daughter is so adorable!! I can't swim a stroke, but there are shampoos especially for swimmers-- in the US I found Ultra Swim Chlorine Removal Shampoo.

Hey Amba your locs look fabulous, both you and your little cutie! I hear there are swim caps for locs but I don't know where to get them. Someone had a link on NP but I never took notice. I use the silicone ones that my swim instructor got me. I'm planning to go to your twin Ama to install my sls in Ghana. I'm now in the process of unravelling my bradelocz. Can't wait to join the sls family.Check out my locsdiary www.locsdiary.piczo.com

Thanks Renea. I've been using an anti-chlorine shampoo by Ion which works really well.

You and your daughter are just darling. She looks so confident with her sisterlocks. I am glad to see a young lady make such a postitive decision. Have fun swimming too. I love the water too. Sisterlocks are perfect for those who just like to get wet.
